Helping Students Overcome b and d Reversals with Orton-Gillingham-Inspired Strategies
Targeted early intervention in the area of handwriting can make a huge difference for young learners. Especially when it comes to common challenges like b and d reversals. Since lowercase letters make up the majority of text in most books, it makes sense to prioritize targeted handwriting instruction. Second, it supports both letter formation and sound-symbol association.
Many students fall back on writing capital letters because they’re easier to recall the letter formation, but this only solves part of the problem. It may help them write the letters, but it doesn’t support accurate decoding and fluency in reading. That’s where structured, multisensory instruction—like the Orton-Gillingham approach—comes in.
The teacher resources I’ve developed are based on Orton-Gillingham principles and have been a game-changer for my students. Through consistent, focused practice, those lingering letter reversals—especially b and d—begin to disappear. With the right tools and repetition, students gain both confidence and accuracy. With the introduction of letter groups, students start to see that the letter formations share common patterns. Additionally, when practising the letter sound while writing, the student is linking the two important aspects of the letters together for future decoding and encoding.
