This site has a large collection of vowel mnemonics and games that have developed for my own students. The picture embedded in the letters is a very helpful way to teach students. I have found that the explicit, systematic, sequential teaching of structured literacy provides some much-needed support for students who struggle.
I have enjoyed teaching many different levels of students over the years, including ESL and as a reading support tutor. It brings me a lot of joy to help students learn. It is a wonderful adventure to solve some of the reading and spelling issues that go along with education.
The Science of Reading is wonderful. I have really enjoyed all the new evidence-based education that is out there. The more I dive into it the easier it has been to help break it down into easy lessons for the kids.
Helping students and other teachers
Creating things for the classroom is the main thing that I do now. When I find a learning gap or something that the students are struggling with, I try to make a game or a resource that can help them master it quickly. A fun and memorable skill review is hidden in a game.
My current position is working with ESL (English Second Language) students and reading support for struggling students. It is a great way to look at the world of education in a new way. We find interesting this to talk about all the time. Students have good questions about English and their challenges have helped me to develop lots of new resources.
Handwriting is So Important
Working one-on-one with students, I can see students make their letters in lots of different ways. I had been looking for the perfect program to teach them for many years. This has led me to write and illustrate a few books of my own, for my students to use in class. I am very excited about the book series Pirate Handwriting.
The letters are broken up into groups very similar to the Orton-Gillingham style. The letters share similar starting points and motions which makes it easier to teach quickly. * I have studied and tested a lot of students. It is super important to teach them lowercase letters and the letter sound more than the letter name. Too many students have letter name interference, which makes decoding and spelling harder. Many students rely on using the capital letters to write.

The Bible art journal has really helped me, it is another wonderful way to study the bible and be inspired by other people’s art while being encouraged by the word of God. Every page of my bible has a least one picture drawn on the page. It took me a few years but I got it done.
Everybody should find something that helps them to refill their souls. Our demanding professions and busy lives can cause us to be pouring out so much of ourselves to help others that we forget to be filled. The Bible is a great way to refill.
