Interactive notebooks are a great way to engage students in a lesson. However, the need to balance the busywork of cutting, coloring, and the overflow of endless paper scraps is an unwanted side effect.
Especially for younger students who are still learning how to hold the scissors. The idea of less cutting and more folding became an idea that bloomed into a worksheet with less paper waste on the floor.

1. The Folding-Flap Mechanic: Tightly Looping Decoding and Encoding

For decades, decoding (reading) and encoding (spelling) were treated as separate subjects. Cognitive science has since proven that they are actually two reciprocal sides of the alphabetic principle. Reading is decoding sounds from print, while spelling is encoding sounds into print.

Word chaining is a cognitive scaffolding tool designed to solve this exact problem:
- By systematically changing only one letter at a time (e.g., changing rub to tub), two-thirds of the word remains visually stable on the page.
